Isle of Man harbours

Nestled in the heart of the Irish Sea, is the Isle of Man, the only entire nation in the world to be recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere, it boasts unrivalled beauty and an exhilarating coastline. Not only are you rewarded with idyllic views of the rolling waves of the Irish Sea, but you can also marvel the charming sights of the active marinas and ports.

The Isle of Man Government currently operates eight sites, two marina facilities and six ports. Douglas Marina, located on the East Coast and used by both commercial and private vessels, is the only Manx port with dedicated passenger handling facilities and roll-on-roll-off vehicles services. Peel Marina on the West Coast is the most active fishing port on the Isle of Man. There are also accessible ports in Castletown, Derbyhaven, Laxey, Port Erin, Port St Mary, and Ramsey.

Having used the same operating software system for many years, the team saw the need for an update to give them more flexibility and management tools.

Judith Hodgson, Harbours Support Officer explains “We started looking for a new system in 2019 having identified that technology requirements meant the existing system would not support and keep pace with the changing needs of the Harbours.

After dealing with the Covid crisis and having spent several months researching suppliers we quickly identified Harbour Assist as the software provider who would fulfil our present and future requirements for a more customer focused and quality standards driven system.

The many features available mean that we can now co-ordinate and audit work streams, update customer/boat information more quickly, batch invoice and use the reporting features to provide enhanced services to our customers whilst safe in the knowledge that our teams have the specialist support available.

Judith continues “Going forward, staff will spend less time being desk bound and become more customer focussed thus enabling us to grow our business.

Our aim was to future proof our systems to provide the best service to our customers both commercial and personal and with Harbour Assist we are able to do just that.’

The Isle of Man Government went live with Harbour Assist in early April and the whole team have embraced the new way of working.
