Hurricane resilience for Nanny Cay
Using technology to overcome natural disasters
System failure is one of the biggest concerns for any modern marina. In the British Virgin Islands that came into sharp focus after the catastrophic hurricanes of 2017. Along with the rest of the island, Nanny Cay resort was almost wiped-out by Hurricane Irma.
Planning for the future
“After the devastating hurricane season of 2017, we decided to make a policy change to our mission-critical systems,” explained Adrian Sinton, IT manager at Nanny Cay Marina in Tortola, BVI, “We decided to switch to a true cloud-based system, and ultimately picked Harbour Assist for our marina, boatyard and hotel management system”.
Hurricane resilience plans included moving mission-critical hardware away from the Islands and minimising the overall IT infrastructure, reducing the physical risk and ongoing maintenance requirements. While local infrastructure may suffer in future extreme weather, the benefit of the cloud is that Harbour Assist is accessible from anywhere in the world, on any device.
“We no longer need to run Windows domain servers and services, and all licensing requirements associated with that are out the window, to my great relief”
Besides future-proofing the resort’s systems, Harbour Assist has created efficiencies for management, making it easier for staff across the resort.
“We really liked the way Harbour Assist works across all our different departments, consolidating customer relations, accounting and debt chasing procedures into one system”
Now a year after implementation, Nanny Cay use Harbour Assist for managing resident and visiting yachts, boatyard services and hotel bookings.
